LIMINA: Thresholds to the Mysteries
V STELE OF JEU
Mon Sept 7th 6:30pm PST
Teacher: Manuel Casanueva
Prerequisites: None
Recorded for Absentees: Yes
The Stele of Jeu is one of the most influential ritual invocations to survive from late antiquity: a text of divine names, sacred commands, and ritual identification centered on the mysterious figure of the “Headless Daimon.”
Limina V explores THE STELE OF JEU, (PGM V.96–172), a ritual text from the Greek Magical Papyri.
Ancient practitioners used ritual speech to assume divine authority, invoke intermediary powers, and transform the state of the practitioner through voice, repetition, breath, and sacred sound. This lecture examines how sacred speech was used in late antiquity to establish contact with the intermediary powers and reposition the practitioner within the cosmos.
Through the figure of the “Headless Daimon,” the rite presents a form of ritual identification in which the speaker assumes divine attributes, commands spiritual forces, and enters an altered state of authority. Limina V analyzes the structure of the invocation itself: its repetitions, voces magicae, cosmic titles, and ritual declarations.
Blending philosophy, ritual studies, and textual analysis, this session enters the intersection of language, power, and transformation in the ancient Mediterranean world.

LIMINA (Latin for thresholds) is a monthly series exploring the mystery traditions: philosophies and magical practices that have come from the great thinkers and theurgists of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds with Professor Manuel Casanueva.
This open series of conversations is oriented toward the central questions, concepts, and sensibilities of Greek and Roman antiquity which still resonate today, and introduces the modern student of magical arts and science to the roots of their traditions.
These sessions explore how ancient ritual treated the voice as a threshold , a way of crossing the limits of ordinary perception and entering a heightened field of attention, breath, and sacred presence.
No prior knowledge required, only curiosity. These gatherings invite participants to reflect on ideas, symbols, and questions that shaped ancient thought and form the source of a great current in the Western Mystery Tradition.
