The famous quote “God is an infinite sphere whose center is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere” will be recognized by students of the mysteries, having been attributed to Hermes Trismegistus amongst others and quoted by Giordano Bruno. The origin of this line is the treatise which in English translates as the Book of the 24 Philosophers. In the Sapphire Rite, third in the series of initiatory rites of sacred texts, our faculty philologist and ceremonialist Manu Casanueva will present his translation and analysis and lead the students through the gates of the mysteries.

Across the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, a brief and enigmatic text circulated in the Latin world under the title Liber XXIV Philosophorum, a collection of twenty-four definitions of the Divine. Its author remains unknown, and its manuscript transmission was limited; yet the work reflects the Neoplatonic currents that shaped medieval thought.

Composed as a sequence of concise propositions, the text approaches the infinite through measured language. The Divine is presented as source and first principle, expressed with clarity and precision.

Manu has translated the work directly from Latin, proceeding line by line through its terminology and structure. His aim has been to preserve the exactness of the original formulations while clarifying their philosophical meaning for contemporary readers.

In ritual practice, these definitions illuminate questions of origin and being. Their brevity allows each statement to be retained and gradually unfolded until what first appears abstract becomes a ground for reflection and meditation.

In the Sapphire Rite, Manu will present the definitions within their historical and philosophical context. He will then lead a contemplative meditation and recitation, so that the text is not only studied but practiced through repetition, attention, and sustained reflection.
