Prerequisites: None, but participants should have some understanding of the Tarot. This course is not for the complete novice.

In 1909, Rider & Co. published a set of 78 illustrated cards that would become the most recognizable Tarot deck in the world. Designed by Arthur Edward Waite and brought to life by Pamela Coleman Smith, a Jamaican-born artist and initiate of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, the Rider Waite Smith deck transformed Tarot into a fully illustrated symbolic world.

Its images are now iconic: crowned figures, winding roads, clouded skies, distant mountains, rivers, gardens, weapons, animals, workers, families, and seekers in every condition of human life. Yet beneath these familiar scenes is a deeper language, carried through color, posture, gesture, repetition, landscape, and deliberately placed symbolic forms.

Symbols are the language of the subconscious. They compress vast spiritual ideas into image, allowing the cards to communicate through pattern, association, and force. A crown is never only a crown. A mountain is never only a mountain. A river, bridge, animal, weapon, garment, or cloud formation may reveal an entire current of meaning when read in context.

This reimagined version of the course moves beyond identifying symbols one by one. Instead, students will explore how symbolic language actually operates within the deck: how images accumulate force through repetition, how recurring motifs create internal relationships between cards, and how color, gesture, posture, object, creature, and landscape shape interpretation.

Throughout the four weeks, Jessica will guide students through the symbolic architecture of the Rider Waite Smith deck, exploring image as magical language and the ways symbols transmit meaning beyond words. Together, the class will examine recurring structures across the deck. This 4-part course includes lecture, guided observation, creative exercises, comparative card study, and practical application. Students will leave with a more refined way of seeing the Tarot: not as a collection of isolated card meanings, but as a living symbolic system whose images continue to reveal hidden relationships, deeper structures, and universal truths.

At 22 Teachings, Jessica leads the Book Club and creates tarot-based ritual classes that invite students to step inside the symbols so that what is read on the page becomes lived, embodied magic. Jessica has always been a seeker, and motherhood initiated her into a new octave of magic. Becoming Bisou’s mother gave her an even clearer sense of why spiritual practice matters in real life, in real time, with tiny hands tugging at the hem of ritual.

Her relationship with the unseen began in childhood, collecting crystals and reading tarot as a way to listen beneath the surface of things. In 2017, she began formal study with Naha at 22 Teachings, where her work in Hermetic Qabalah, ritual magic, and tarot became a dedicated path. She approaches the tarot as a living book of wisdom, a mirror for our human experience, and a practical tool for choosing the next right step when the soul is quietly asking for change.
