Hosta Plant – Rulership of Saturn

Our astrological garden in the Academy hosts 7 plants with 7 classical planetary rulers. They are cared for by our plant steward Robin. She shares these insights about our Saturnian bloomer:

The Hosta is chosen to represent Saturn as it represents plants that not only grow in, but require severe and even harsh environments to grow and even thrive.
The Hosta is thought to be native to China and spread north and south adapting to extreme conditions across Asia. The migration completed a huge circle in each direction like a wheel and reached Japan via ancient land bridges where it has been grown for hundreds of years in temple gardens.
Wild hostas grow on seemingly inhospitable rock walls and survive extremely low temperatures and confining conditions.
Chinese legend holds that a hosta grows where a goddess has dropped her hairpin (in reference to its closed flower shape)
Strangely, molecular phylogenies are showing that the strictly Asian Hosta is closely related to the strictly American genera Agave, Hesperocallis, and Yucca.
See our blooming Hosta (she shared that Hosta rarely blooms indoors) in the black pot representing Binah – Saturn.
