This ritual group working is intended to use the planetary retrograde for a beneficial application while banishing its negative influence. At the beginning of the retrograde cycle, we will set ourselves in appropriate alignment for an effective and elegant transit.

Upon this day, Mercury enters Sagittarius, which is one of the classical planetary transits assigned to the decan wheel, upon which MacGregor Mathers of the Golden Dawn placed the Minor Arcana Keys of the Tarot, and corresponds to the 8 of Wands.

This card is called Lord of Swiftness. This energy was invoked on November 2 and will be invoked in its Retrograde form for this occasion, the 8 of Wands Reversed.

This allows for the diversification of energy where it is needed, the gentle pacing after a time of quickening, and strengthening and replenishing the Etheric Body.

Please have a place where you are free from distraction and enough room to spread your arms for ritual movements.

Have a journal and something to write with.

You will want to have an altar set up for this working, which can be as simple as a tea light and a cup of water, or as elaborate as you wish. The power of the ritual lies in the sincerity of your practice and not in many supplies, though these things can assist you in creating a favorable environment to do the work.

• Water for purification
• Incense for consecrating and banishing – copal works well, so does sage
• A common herb for mercury is lavender, and if you have lavender you can burn it during the ritual, add it to water, or steep it as a tea before the ritual begins.
• The Magician card from your tarot deck. The 8 of Wands.
