LIMINA: Thresholds to the Mysteries
III The Mithras Liturgy
rec July 2026
Teacher: Manuel Casanueva
Prerequisites: None
Mithras was an ancient god associated with light, cosmic order, initiation, and the power of the sun. His cult spread widely through the Roman world and became one of the most influential mystery traditions of late antiquity.
Limina III: The Mithras Liturgy explores one of the most fascinating texts preserved within the Greek Magical Papyri: a ritual of solar ascent centered on Helios-Mithras, where sacred language, breath, and vocal resonance guided the ancients through a visionary encounter with Helios-Mithras and the cosmic order itself.
Through lecture, textual interpretation, and guided vocal practice, Manu will invite the participants to enter a world in which the human being is understood as a living microcosm, moving from elemental invocation into solar vision, using voces magicae, elemental names, solar vowels, and divine epithets as instruments of ascent.
The evening includes a guided vocal lab based on selected sound patterns from the text. Approached both academically and experientially, these ancient names invite us to explore how ritual language shapes breath, attention, and presence.
Here, the voice becomes a threshold between the human body and the cosmic order.
LIMINA (Latin for thresholds) is a monthly series exploring the mystery traditions: philosophies and magical practices that have come from the great thinkers and theurgists of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds with Professor Manuel Casanueva.
This open series of conversations is oriented toward the central questions, concepts, and sensibilities of Greek and Roman antiquity which still resonate today, and introduces the modern student of magical arts and science to the roots of their traditions.
These sessions explore how ancient ritual treated the voice as a threshold , a way of crossing the limits of ordinary perception and entering a heightened field of attention, breath, and sacred presence.
No prior knowledge required, only curiosity. These gatherings invite participants to reflect on ideas, symbols, and questions that shaped ancient thought and form the source of a great current in the Western Mystery Tradition.
